In flamenco, binary rhythms are those based on measures of two or four beats, and they are essential for many of its palos (styles). Here are some notable examples of binary rhythms:
- Tientos: This palo has a binary measure (4 beats) and is characterized by its slow and solemn rhythm, which allows for great expressiveness.
- Tangos: With a binary measure (4 beats), it has a cheerful and dynamic character. It is one of the most versatile rhythms in flamenco.
- Rumba flamenca: Also based on a binary measure (4 beats), with more modern influences and a marked rhythm that invites dancing.
- Zapateado: Although its rhythmic structure can vary, it is often based on a binary measure that highlights the use of taconeo (footwork).
